Rachel Silverstein Presents to the US Coastal Research Program

In January 2021, the United States Coastal Research Program (USCRP) brought together a virtual workshop of experts on coastal pollutants and resilient coastal ecosystems. South Florida faces numerous threats to its water and ecosystems from pollutants and inadequate infrastructure.

Our very own Rachel Silverstein, Executive Director and Waterkeeper at Miami Waterkeeper, delivered a presentation entitled “Addressing Septic, Sewer, and Stormwater Vulnerability to Sea Level Rise.” Septic tanks have always caused pollution problems in South Florida–even as far back as the 1940s–and ensuring clean water means transitioning from 120,000 septic tanks in Miami-Dade County to a fully integrated public sewer system. Our sensitive ecosystem may collapse if we do not get Miami completely off septic.

USCRP’s workshop took place from January 5-7 and 12-14. The USCRP was created by major federal agencies, university partners, scientists, and stakeholders recognizing the importance of securing healthy coastal ecosystems.

Miami Waterkeeper understands that science is a critical part of the fight for clean water. Communicating research is crucial to changing policy and educating the community.
