Melissa, a Miami native, pursued her passion for environmental studies, earning a master's degree from Florida International University. During her graduate studies, she conducted
research bridging environmental science and social sciences. Utilizing the method of photovoice, Melissa engaged Miami residents in capturing their emotional connections to the
Miami River through photography and personal narratives. This work not only sheds light on the community's relationship with the river but also serves as a catalyst for advocating further protection and preservation efforts for this historic yet often overlooked waterway. With a commitment to community impact akin to Miami Waterkeeper's mission, Melissa strives to leverage her expertise and experiences to foster positive community change. Beyond her professional pursuits, she enjoys daily gym sessions, outdoor activities like hiking and gardening, and exploring local cuisine.
