Mariana is Miami Waterkeeper's newest Policy Specialist!

Mariana Aziz Pico is an environmental lawyer with over a decade of experience in environmental law and policy. She earned her law degree from the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM) and a master’s degree in Environmental Law and Public Policy from University College London (UCL).


Mariana has a diverse background in both the public and nonprofit sectors. She previously worked with the Mexican government on projects to strengthen environmental regulations and advocate for the right to a healthy environment at the Mexican Supreme Court of Justice. Her work in the public sector focused on regulatory reform and environmental justice.

Before joining Miami Waterkeeper, Mariana was the Transparency Campaigns Director at Oceana in Mexico, leading efforts that advanced ocean conservation. Her work helped secure the ongoing publication of real-time satellite data on fishing vessels by the Mexican government, and she played a pivotal role in Mexico’s signing and ratification of the Port State Measures Agreement (PSMA), a critical international treaty to combat illegal fishing.
At Miami Waterkeeper, Mariana continues her mission to ensure that legal frameworks and public policies safeguard oceans and natural resources for everyone as a Policy Specialist
