Craig grew up on Florida's west coast, spending his childhood around boats with the Gulf of Mexico as his playground. He has been a certified SCUBA diver since the age of 14. After graduating from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, he worked as a waterskiing instructor and a U.S. Coast Guard licensed yacht captain before joining Miami-Dade County’s Dept. of Environmental Resources (DERM).
Craig joined Miami Waterkeeper in 2025 after a storied 37 year career with DERM. As Chief of DERM’s Water Resources Coordination Division, he oversaw environmental planning, monitoring, and restoration projects in South Florida. He was also responsible for assisting state and federal agencies including the South Florida Water Management District and the Army Corps of Engineers on the planning and conceptual design of environmental and hydrologic restoration efforts. This included serving as an Army Corps of Engineers Project Delivery Team member for 4 of the 57 project components of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP), the largest environmental restoration project ever undertaken. In this capacity, his responsibilities included coordination of state and federal CERP efforts with DERM’s local restoration projects spanning more than two decades.
Craig also represented Miami-Dade County as a voting member of the Lake Belt Mitigation Committee and led county efforts to obtain several key delegations of state authority, including the first-of-its-kind delegation to expedite the permitting process for single-family docks in Miami-Dade’s tidal waters as well as a delegation for mangrove trimming which includes a local certification and registration process to license professional mangrove trimmers.
His Biscayne Bay-related work includes contributing to the planning and conceptual design of Biscayne Bay Coastal Wetlands and Biscayne Bay Southeast Everglades CERP projects, early development of the Biscayne Bay Remedial Action Plan, the Biscayne Bay Partnership Initiative, the Miami-Dade County Manatee Protection Plan, and the Biscayne Bay Access Plan He has also served on the Miami River Commission Greenway Committee and as coordinator of the Miami River Enforcement Group.
Craig’s contributions to environmental monitoring, planning, and conservation have been recognized with numerous awards, including Miami Waterkeeper’s Porter Prize (2025), the Biscayne Bay Marine Health Summit Service Award (2024), the Village of Palmetto Bay Mayor’s Environmental Award (2023), Tropical Audubon Society’s Daniel Beard Government Conservation Award (2022), the American Society for Public Administration’s John W. Gaston, Jr. Award (2020) and the Florida Association of Environmental Professionals South Florida Chapter Outstanding Achievement Award as Founder and Trustee (2009).
A committed native-plant enthusiast, Craig serves as Vice Chair of the Palmetto Bay Tree Advisory Board, represents Miami Waterkeeper on Miami-Dade County Mayor Levine Cava’s Evaluation and Appraisal Task Force and sits on the Science Advisory Board for the Bahamas Marine Ecocentre. Craig is a life member of the Bahamas National Trust and The Nature Conservancy. When not working to restore Biscayne Bay, he can often be found sailing, freediving, or paddling its waters with family and friends.
