What was once a thriving, vibrant reef ecosystem off the coast of Miami is now a wasteland.
During the PortMiami dredge project, millions of corals were buried in sediment—including the last natural staghorn corals in Florida. Nearly 300 acres of reef were destroyed in an instant.
Our Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Rachel Silverstein, dove into the water expecting to see living coral. Instead, she surfaced in shock: the reef was gone.

The Army Corps never fully addressed the devastation they caused. Critical coral habitat remains buried. Populations of threatened species haven’t recovered. Florida’s coral reef system—an essential natural defense against storms and erosion—has been left to fend for itself.
And now, they want to do it again at Port Everglades.
Florida cannot afford to repeat this mistake.
