Voice your Support for Plastic-Free 305
Miami Waterkeeper is pleased to support this initiative from our friends at Debris-Free Oceans.
The Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners will vote on whether to create a “Plastic Free 305” program on Wednesday, December 1. YOU can help make this happen! Support Resolution 212677 directing the Miami-Dade County Mayor to create “Plastic Free 305,” a volunteer certification program that would recognize and support businesses eliminating single-use plastics from their operations. This initiative would pave the way for a resilient and healthy South Florida by reducing the use, disposal, and pollution of millions of single-use plastics in Florida’s most populous county.
Miami-Dade needs this NOW because:
• Humans consume a credit card worth of plastic every single week and nanoplastics leach from our gut to our cardiovascular systems.
• Greenhouse gases are emitted when plastics are produced, disposed of, and even when they break apart in the environment.
• Despite cleanups and waste management efforts, 2-3 trucks worth of plastic enters our ocean every minute.
• Florida is home to the MOST impacts to marine life caused by plastics in the entire US.
Miami-Dade County is poised to be a leader in demonstrating how community-based solutions involving local governments, businesses, and nonprofits can solve local problems and have a global impact; the world is watching us as we navigate the challenges of water quality and climate change at ground zero. Accordingly, we urge you to support Resolution 212677 directing our Miami-Dade County Mayor to create the “Plastic Free 305” program.
