As a new year begins, we invite you to join Ocean Conservancy and Miami Waterkeeper in a conversation on the past and future of Miami’s water quality. We’ll discuss harmful algal blooms, sea level rise and wildlife issues facing our coral reefs and manatee populations.

Want to make a difference for the ocean? Join us before the panel discussion to participate in a Marine Debris Cleanup & BioBlitz on Darwin Beach. The full schedule includes:

5:00pm - A BioBlitz and Marine Debris Cleanup at Darwin Beach, in front of the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel campus, led by Miami Waterkeeper

6:30pm - Panel Discussion moderated by Ocean Conservancy’s Director of Florida Conservation, Jon Paul “J.P.” Brooker, featuring -

  • Aliza Karim, Science & Research Manager, Miami Waterkeeper
  • Pamela Sweeney, Senior Scientist, Miami-Dade County
  • Julia Wester, Director of Program Development (Field School) & Associate Director of ECS (University of Miami)

8:00pm - Networking Cocktail Reception

If you wish to participate in the BioBlitz and Marine Debris Cleanup at Darwin Beach beforehand, it may require a lot of walking and heavy lifting; hence, teenagers and older groups are recommended. If younger age groups participate, they should be monitored at all times by the designated guardian, parents, etc. *Community Service hours also provided* 

Important Volunteer Information:

Please be on time! Registration begins 15 minutes before the volunteer event starts.

  • Please Bring:

    • Refillable water bottle. Stay hydrated and be prepared to walk around and clean-up outside!

    • Closed-toe shoes are required and long-sleeved shirts are recommended.

    • A hat, sunblock, and insect repellent (recommended).

    • Gloves you feel comfortable wearing (otherwise Miami Waterkeeper will provide gloves).
