Miami Waterkeeper Participates in Leonardo DiCaprio’s Before the Flood Film and Panel Discussions around Miami
This month, we had the exciting opportunity to participate in two panel discussions with the filmmakers of Before the Flood, including Fisher Stevens and surprise guest Leonardo DiCaprio! We were also joined by experts Professor Kenny Broad of the University of Miami and Miami Beach Mayor Phil Levine. Before the Flood is a documentary starring Leonardo DiCaprio and directed by Fisher Stevens that highlights current and future impacts of climate change from a global perspective. Our Waterkeeper, Dr. Rachel Silverstein, consulted on the film and participated in the early screenings and panel discussions at University of Miami and Miami Beach’s New World Symphony. The documentary will air for free on multiple internet channels and on the National Geographic Channel on October 30th. Be sure to check it out! More information available here.
Drumroll please! Introducing our new Staff Attorney & Program Director: Kelly Cox, Esq.
We are so excited to welcome Kelly Cox to our Miami Waterkeeper family. Kelly graduated from the University of Miami where she received a J.D. and a Master’s in Marine Conservation. Kelly was President of the Environmental Law Society at UM where she also served as Student Writing Editor on the Inter-American Law Review. Kelly has published scholarly articles on invasive lionfish and marine zoning laws. She has a forthcoming publication about invasive mangrove species in south Florida. Kelly has worked extensively in environmental law where she has contributed to lawsuits involving endangered species, clean water, urban development, transportation, nuclear power, and environmental justice issues. “I’m very excited to join the Miami Waterkeeper team and to contribute to the ongoing efforts to safeguard south Florida resources for the benefit of the public,” Kelly said. A south Florida native, Kelly enjoys kayaking, fishing, and scuba diving in her spare time. Her favorite spot on the Bay is the south Bay grass flats where she can watch rays jumping, manatees feeding, and wading birds fishing near the mangrove shoreline.

Don't Boo! VOTE NO in November for anti-solar amendment: Amendment 1 blocks the sun!
While at first glance, Amendment 1 may sound “pro-solar”, it is really a trick backed by utility companies to make independent solar power (i.e. panels on your home) more costly and difficult to obtain. This amendment uses deceptive language to trick the pro-solar public into voting anti-solar. If you care about the future success of solar energy in Florida, remember to vote NO on ONE in NOVEMBER.
