Mangrove Cleanup & Fossil Reef Snorkel at Bear Cut Preserve

Miami Waterkeeper is excited to continue our partnership with Miami EcoAdventures and welcome volunteers back for this impactful marine clean-up experience. Join us for a guided walking clean-up (approximately 0.7 miles) through the mangroves of Bear Cut Preserve, followed by a rewarding snorkeling clean-up at Fossil Reef.

This is a FREE volunteer event. To ensure strong attendance, a $0.50 RSVP hold is required RSVP. A $55 no-show fee will only be charged if you RSVP and do not attend or cancel in advance.

Snorkeling gear (mask, snorkel & fins), clean-up supplies, and guidance from Miami Waterkeeper and Miami EcoAdventures staff are provided.


Volunteer Day Main Tasks:

  • Removal of marine debris from the mangrove habitats followed by snorkeling

This volunteer event may require heavy lifting and experience snorkeling, hence teenagers and older groups are recommended. If younger age groups participate, they should be monitored at all times by the designated guardian, parents, etc. *Community Service hours also provided* 

Important Volunteer Information:

Please be on time, registration begins 30 minutes before the volunteer workday starts. Please arrive at 9:00am!

  • Please Bring:

    • Refillable water bottle. Stay hydrated and be prepared to work outside and on the water.

    • Closed-toe shoes are required and long-sleeved shirts are and long pants are recommended (clothes that can get wet).

    • Swimsuit/rashguard for snorkeling (mask and snorkels are provided but fins are not provided- due to the shallow nature of the reef, we do not recommend them). 
    • A hat, sunblock, and insect repellent (recommended).

    • Gloves you feel comfortable wearing (otherwise Miami Waterkeeper will provide gloves).

    • The event is weather dependent and will be canceled with at least 24 hours notice if inclement weather is anticipated.

    • The event lasts 3 hours with an end time of around 12:30pm. Please meet at the Biscayne Nature Center (6767 Crandon Blvd. Key Biscayne, FL 33149) at 9:00am.
