Foxwynd Foundation Commits to Matching Donations Made to Miami Waterkeeper to Restore Biscayne Bay Habitats through Expanded Volunteer Engagement

Miami Waterkeeper has been awarded a matching grant of nearly $15,500 from the Foxwynd Foundation to make every dollar donated to the organization’s “Clean Water, Thriving Habitats: Volunteer Restoration Project” have 2x the impact. The project includes expanded coastal habitat restoration and marine debris clean-up events, engaging hundreds of community volunteers to protect Biscayne Bay’s vital ecosystems.

Thanks to the Foxwynd Foundation, community members who volunteer with Miami Waterkeeper will have the unique opportunity to restore South Florida’s native ecosystems, which are essential habitats for local wildlife – fish, birds, and more – and which serve as natural buffers against erosion and storm surge. These remote sites, often neglected due to their inaccessibility, will now benefit from regular volunteer clean-ups supported by kayak and boat access. Community volunteers will:
- Remove invasive species.
- Plant native vegetation.
- Clean up marine debris from mangrove spoil islands.
“Thanks to the Foxwynd Foundation, generous donors to our Clean Water, Thriving Habitats Project will have their impact doubled,” said Rachel Silverstein, Ph.D., CEO and Waterkeeper. “And we will be able to expand our restoration efforts by engaging more volunteers in meaningful, hands-on work to protect Biscayne Bay. This partnership not only helps restore critical habitat but also empowers our community to take action for the water we all depend on.”
The Foxwynd Foundation DAF funded the Foxwynd Foundation’s generous donation to Miami Waterkeeper, a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that protects Biscayne Bay and the surrounding watershed. Community donations and the matching funds from the Foxwynd Foundation will allow the Miami Waterkeeper team to host 23 additional volunteer events over the next 12 months, restoring and cleaning up seven acres of native habitat and removing nearly 1,000 pounds of marine debris from sensitive ecosystems.
More than 400 community members are expected to volunteer, including high school students in Miami Waterkeeper’s Junior Ambassador program and participants in the organization’s Youth Environmental Action Days and Floating Classrooms, helping to build the next generation of environmental leaders.
