Dirty Water Bills are on the Horizon

Right now, SB 1240 and HB 1194 are making their way through the Florida House and Senate. If passed, these bills will preempt local governments from regulating their own water resources. Why is this troublesome? Because Florida’s environment and aquatic resources are varied and biodiverse. Since there is no “one size fits all” approach to caring for the environment, local governments are critical institutions in regulating our waters for the public interest. These bills do not include language that protects existing local ordinances, such as the Florida-friendly fertilizer use on urban landscapes ordinance, which was developed to reduce the amount of nutrients entering our sensitive waterways.
