Why hurricane flooding is about to get even more dangerous in Florida

In November 2025, National Geographic put the Port Everglades fight in global context, reporting that the 2023 marine heat wave caused staghorn and elkhorn corals to go functionally extinct across Florida — one of the first times such a declaration has been made for these two species.
