Doral Glades Park Grand Opening

Miami Waterkeeper staff recently attended the grand opening of the new Doral Glades Park, a beautiful community resource that focuses heavily on nature and conservation. Over the past year, Miami Waterkeeper contribute our time and expertise to the park's Nature Center development so we were thrilled to see it complete and congratulate everyone involved!

The park covers 25 acres in total with a variety of amenities including tennis and basketball courts; a playground; bike lanes; a lake with kayaking and fishing opportunities; nature trails; wetland boardwalk; and a multipurpose building that houses the Doral Nature Center. Our Outreach Coordinator, Dana, worked alongside Doral's Park and Recreation Director Barbara Hernandez, advising on topics for the nature center.

The nature center pays tribute to the Florida Everglades and the unique habitat it provides for flora and fauna. Miami Waterkeeper helped address all the wonderful aspects that Florida's natural environment has to offer, from the vegetation and animals to the land and people of Florida by writing and editing text used within the various educational displays in the center. Additionally, Miami Waterkeeper provided information on stormwater, soil structure of South Florida, how our aquifer gets recharged, how sea-level rise poses a threat to our aquifer, and how what we put in our backyards (fertilizers and herbicides) can harm our waterways.

The whole exhibit focuses heavily on the history of the area, its nature, and how the City of Doral got where they are today; including a firm message of how society has a responsibility to protect and conserve ecologically valuable areas such as the Everglades.

Miami Waterkeeper looks forward to holding a water patrol training at the Doral Nature Center before the year ends, the date is TBD. If interested, check out our 1000 Eyes on the Water Program for a training near you!
