PRESS RELEASE

With perfect weather following a refreshing cold snap, over 150 people came out Saturday to join Miami Waterkeeper in celebrating Biscayne Bay for Bay Day. Attendees enjoyed kayaking, sailing, boat rides with Island Queen Cruises, and trips to nearby spoil island in Biscayne Bay. Bay Day is part of a national SPLASH event series with Waterkeeper Alliance, aimed at rallying support for clean waterways and sponsored nationally by Toyota. This family-friendly event is Miami Waterkeeper’s annual community rally for Biscayne Bay.

This year, the event was held in partnership with Shake-a-Leg, and featured a variety of water-based activities, including food from Rubio’s Coastal Grill and SALT waterfront restaurant and brews from Biscayne Bay Brewery. Kids also participated in a fishing clinic led by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission’s Florida Youth Conservation Centers Network and an arts and crafts project celebrating Florida’s unique wildlife as a part of a project with Xavier Cortada. The end of the day rounded out with a beachside island yoga session from local Buddha Shack yoga.

“We are so thrilled that the community came out to celebrate our amazing Bay with us,” says Kelly Cox, Miami Waterkeeper Staff Attorney and Program Director. “This unique ecosystem is an incredible resource for our community and improving appreciation and access is critical to our mission.”

“It was fabulous to host the event at Shake-A-Leg where we can offer on the-water activities for attendees. We believe that if the community enjoys and appreciates the Bay, they will be investing in the mission to protect it,” says Miami Waterkeeper Executive Director and Waterkeeper, Rachel Silverstein.

Miami Waterkeeper’s event was made possible by generous support from our corporate sponsors. Toyota is the presenting sponsor of the nation-wide SPLASH series events.

"We are grateful for Toyota's commitment to the environment and clean water - exemplified by the Toyota Mirai - and thank them for another great year of supporting the health of communities and their waterways through the SPLASH Event Series," said Waterkeeper Alliance Executive Director Marc Yaggi.

Platinum sponsors for the event included Uniesse Yachts and Monty’s restaurant, located at Prime Marina just next to the event space. Other sponsors who have supported Miami Waterkeeper for this event and through the year include: Whole Foods, TUUCI, Coffey Burlington, EveryMundo, Grove Properties, and Budget Dumpster. In-Kind Sponsors include Island Queen Cruises, Rubio’s Coastal Grill, Biscayne Bay Brewing, Xavier Cortada’s Florida is exhibit and SkinMedica.

All proceeds benefit Miami Waterkeeper’s efforts to provide swimmable, drinkable, fishable water for all in South Florida.  Miami Waterkeeper is a Miami-based nonprofit organization that advocates for South Florida’s watershed and wildlife. Our goal is to educate locals and visitors about the vital role of clean water in Miami’s clean water economy, and to empower them to take an active role in community decision-making. We hope to ensure a clean and vibrant, water-based coastal culture and ecosystem for generations to come.
