Thank you for Voting to Hold the Line!

Protect the Everglades and our Drinking Water

For decades, Miami-Dade has protected a boundary line to stop urban sprawl into the Everglades, called the “Urban Development Boundary." This is one of our best tools to protect the Everglades and our drinking water.

Yet on September 9, the majority of the County Commission voted “yes” to move the Urban Development Boundary and allow the addition of an 800-acre development in the Everglades floodplain. Although it was not enough to stop the project, five commissioners, Commissioners Danielle Cohen-Higgins, Eileen Higgins, Jean Monestime, Raquel Regalado, and René Garcia, voted “no” to hold the line and protect the Everglades.

This outcome is not the final word on this project, as the issue will be back before the Commission for another vote. 

Building this massive project represents a significant threat to Biscayne Bay, the Everglades, our agricultural community, and our drinking water. The Commissioners who voted “no” to moving the line need to hear from the community that we applaud their decision to stand up for resources in the public trust.
