Understanding the Turkey Point Campaign
Turkey Point nuclear power plant, located ~30 miles from Miami, has become a focal point in the conversation about energy security and environmental safety in South Florida. As one of the nation’s most climate-vulnerable nuclear facilities, it presents significant risks to our water supply and coastal ecosystems.
Key Issues:
- Contamination Concerns: The plant has been leaking contaminated water into our aquifer and Biscayne Bay, threatening the primary drinking water source for over 3 million residents.
- Aging Infrastructure: With proposals to extend its operation until 2053, Turkey Point is poised to become one of the world’s first 80-year-old nuclear reactors, raising alarm over the safety and reliability of aging infrastructure in the face of rising sea levels.
- Environmental Impact: The challenges posed by Turkey Point are not just local; they serve as a critical case study for coastal communities worldwide grappling with the intersection of nuclear energy, climate change, and water quality.
At the 7th Annual State of the Water, we will dive deep into these issues, featuring expert presentations and discussions aimed at exploring innovative solutions for protecting our waters while ensuring reliable energy.
