I am a resident of Miami, Fl, and a very concerned animal in a threatened ecosystem. I have participated in several beach clean-ups to date, and I am always on the lookout for litter and non-biodegradable waste to bring back with me whenever I enjoy our local beaches. In my day-to-day life, I have been making a conscious effort to reduce my use of single-use plastics. As a person who values fitness and stays very active, I am always seeking out physical challenges to push me to my limits.
When the opportunity to haul 100 pounds of recovered plastic waste 26.2 miles in the upcoming Miami Marathon presented itself, like any normal person I just couldn't pass it up! My friend Carlos GAVIRIA, a workout buddy and yoga partner, first approached me with this crazy idea. His enthusiasm for this cause was contagious, and he didn't have much trouble getting me excited for the challenge. Raising awareness and funds for Miami Waterkeeper is a wonderful cause. Their commitment to protecting local wildlife and ecosystems, as well as ensuring that our South Florida waters remain swimmable, drinkable and fishable is commendable, and I'm proud to contribute with this gesture.
